Trump & Dimon So Wrong On EU Collapse
Dissecting Trump’s NSS—The Myth of "European Greatness"
I am totally obsessed with Donald Trump's national security strategy because of what he gets wrong in his section on "Promoting European Greatness." I understand where he's coming from—except when it comes to his European Union policy. I am going to dissect this piece by piece and explain why this strategy is 30 years too late.
The GDP Statistic: Draghi’s Reality vs. Trump’s Diagnosis
The strategy starts by sounding okay. It claims American officials are used to thinking of European problems in terms of insufficient military spending and economic stagnation. It cites an accurate statistic: continental Europe’s share of global GDP has dropped from 25% in 1990 to 14% today.
This is a fact—one Mario Draghi cited months ago in his landmark report on competitiveness. But here is where the NSS fails: it treats this as a sign of terminal decline. In reality, Europe is already moving to remedy this through massive consolidation. If Trump's advisers were following the recent proposals, they would see that insufficient military spending is becoming a thing of the past. They are looking at the rearview mirror, not the road ahead.
"Civilization Erasure": The Crux of Sovereignty
The strategy uses a heavy-duty term: "Civilization Erasure." It argues that the EU and other transnational bodies undermine political liberty and sovereignty.
But consider this: the Treaty of Rome essentially involved member states handing over sovereignty to a larger body to make the rules. It’s like the 50 US states; we handed our sovereignty to the federal government. The European nation-states are doing the same, only they’ve evolved into a federalist trajectory that is much harder to "correct" than the U.S. administration realizes.
The Migration Myth vs. The Mattei Plan
Trump’s NSS claims migration is "transforming the continent and creating strife."
The strategy predicts the continent will be "unrecognizable in 20 years" due to birth rates and immigration. This ignores the Migration Pact and Giorgia Meloni’s Mattei Plan—a masterful way of dealing with migration from Africa that also secures critical raw materials. This is not a runaway problem; it’s a policy area Europe is actively managing.
Regulatory "Suffocation" or Strategic Consolidation?
Trump calls for Europe to abandon its "failed focus on regulatory suffocation."
It’s a narrow view to sum up Europe in one paragraph as "suffocated." It ignores the portfolios of the Commission, the Parliament, and the strategic documents on the table. Who is advising the president? They are missing the prophetic horizon.
The Prophetic Lens: From Republic to Empire
As I’ve cited before, the Book of Daniel and Revelation point to a very powerful Europe at the end of time. Think of it this way: Julius Caesar’s Roman Republic had to lead to Augustus’s Roman Empire.
The Europe evolving right now is leading toward that biblical depiction. It is an empire synonymous with trade, becoming so strong it may eventually overtake the United States. Everything is in place. It may be happening slowly, but it is happening—whether the U.S. National Security Strategy recognizes it or not.
