EU Collapse? Serious? Why the 700 Club is Dead Wrong

Disinformation and the European Union: A Response to the 700 Club

Despite the current stature of the European Union, a persistent tide of disinformation continues to circulate online. For nearly three decades, we have seen cyclical reports prophesying the imminent collapse of the Union. Recently, the 700 Club aired a broadcast titled "The European Union Has Failed and It’s Getting Worse," reported by Gordon Robertson.

While I have a personal affinity for Gordon, this particular broadcast is a disaster of misinformation. With approximately 300,000 views, it signifies that a massive audience is being systematically misinformed. It is essential to examine the facts on the ground so that you are not among them.

Error I: The Myth of Military Insolvency

In the broadcast, Gordon asserts that European nations lack the funds to support long-term military operations, specifically citing a lack of support in current geopolitical conflicts. This claim is fundamentally decoupled from reality.

The European Union is currently funneling €800 billion into defense projects. The European Commission has recently approved 57 distinct defense initiatives, guided by a comprehensive Readiness Roadmap extending through 2030. These are not mere abstractions; they are flagship initiatives designed to close Europe’s capability gaps:

  • The European Air Shield

  • The European Space Shield

  • The European Drone Defense Initiative

  • The Eastern Flank Watch

By 2030, the goal is to ensure the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB) can deliver every capability member states require. Even Moscow has noted the "rapid and intense" militarization of the EU, viewing it as a guarantee of the European elite's own existence. The EU is on a fast track toward autonomous defense; to claim they lack the resources is the first major piece of disinformation.

Error II: Misunderstanding the Origins and Intent of the Union

Gordon’s second error concerns the very history of the EU. He states that the major goal behind its formation—which he claims was 30 years ago—was simply to make people wealthier.

In reality, the foundation of the Union dates back 75 years. It began in 1951 with the European Coal and Steel Community, a project explicitly designed to prevent war between France and Germany by making conflict materially impossible. While economic cooperation followed with the Treaty of Rome in 1957, it was always intended as a first step toward a political union. The primary driver was peace through unity, not merely fiscal gain.

Error III: The "Germany" Fallacy and the Reality of Poverty

The broadcast focuses on Germany as if it were the sole barometer of the European economy. This ignores the 27 member nations, many of which—particularly in the Eastern Bloc—are performing exceptionally well. The hyper-fixation on Germany stems from the misconception that Germany "runs" the EU. In truth, Germany’s historical prosperity was a direct result of its EU membership, benefiting from the free-flowing trade and stable markets provided by its neighbors.

Furthermore, the broadcast utilizes footage of "ghetto" areas to imply dire, widespread poverty. As someone who has traveled extensively throughout Europe’s diverse cities, I can attest that these images are not representative of the continent. While every economy has disparities, to frame the EU as a landscape of "dire poverty" is a total fabrication.

The Path Forward: Trade Power and "EU Inc."

Gordon also failed to acknowledge the EU’s status as a global trade hub. We are the largest trader of manufactured goods and services in the world, with an extensive network of trade agreements covering 78 countries.

To address the stagnation noted in reports like the Draghi Report, the EU is actively moving to eliminate stifling regulations. Key strategies currently in motion include:

  • The Enrico Letta Report: Focused on reinforcing the Single Market.

  • The 28th Regime (EU Inc.): This initiative aims to create a uniform company structure, allowing entrepreneurs to register a business in any member state within 48 hours.

The goal is to allow businesses to operate and raise financing as seamlessly as they do in the United States or China. Gordon’s conclusion that "government-led growth" is failing misses the point: the EU is currently restructuring to incentivize individual entrepreneurs and private wealth creation.

Conclusion

Gordon Robertson describes his broadcast as "a report you’re not likely to see anywhere else." That is because it is built on a foundation of outdated news and selective data. It ignores the strategic strides the EU is making to bolster its economy and defense.

This is "amateur news" that buries the truth under erroneous narratives. Europe is doing remarkably well despite the crises it has faced, and it is on a fast track to becoming an even more formidable global power.
