The Unthinkable: Viktor Orbán Unseated After 16 Years
Today, the unthinkable happened. Hungary's prime minister, Viktor Orbán, was unseated after 16 years in power. But Viktor Orbán was the "bad boy" of the European Union. And today, I'm going to talk about what nobody's talking about. I'm going to tell you what nobody's going to tell you: how his unseating is about to unleash the high-speed EU train going forward.
The Champion of Sovereignty vs. The EU Stratosphere
Viktor Orbán is a staunch conservative in the EU stratosphere. He's referred to as far-right authoritarian and he is the champion of national sovereignty. But what Viktor Orbán did for 16 years as he was at the helm of Hungary was kept the European Union from moving forward.
He used what's called their unanimity rule, which states that on major policy, all EU nations have to agree. They would not get Viktor Orbán's agreement in several areas of policy. This included:
The European Union's common migration policy
EU foreign policy
Hungary became the rogue nation within the European Union. There was actually talk by Guy Verhofstadt of forming an entirely new treaty and not having Hungary sign up as a way to eliminate Hungary, because they were always keeping the European Union from moving forward.
The Breakdown of the Unanimity Rule
Even the unanimity rule—the passerelle clause, which states that they can bypass certain articles in the treaty if they all agree on an area—requires unanimity to be triggered. Well, now with Viktor Orbán gone, the EU steam train can totally move forward.
But there's more that Viktor Orbán contributed to within the European Union. He helped form the Patriots for Europe. It is the third largest political party; they are considered the far right, and Orbán acted as the glue within this group. He built the Patriots to help the European Union continue to evolve along more of the nation-state ideology versus federalist ideology, which eliminates the nation-state essentially in favor of the superstate.
Pandora’s Box: Democratic Standards and Funding
Hungary was such a "bad boy" and Viktor Orbán’s defiance was so severe that the EU triggered a never-before-used rule of law procedure against Hungary in April of 2022 to strip its EU funding for breaching the bloc's democratic standards.
This opened up an even bigger Pandora's box of democratic standards. Orbán countered by stating which democratic principles were being violated by the EU itself. That opened up more interesting discussions on democracy and how democracy was being breached.
A Tectonic Shift: The Unstoppable European Union
Viktor Orbán was a real impediment to the European Union moving forward. But that impediment is now gone. The new prime minister, while he's center-right, is also more pro-European Union. He will not be vetoing the legislation that's going to move the European Union forward.
The days ahead are going to be very interesting because now the European Union is basically unstoppable.
This is what nobody else will be talking about with the unseating of Viktor Orbán. They'll be talking about the intricacies of policy and how now that policy won't be this or that. But what they're not going to be telling you is that you're going to see a tectonic shift. These shifts have been happening—major earthquakes that have been causing the EU to move forward dramatically in different directions:
Defense: Massive funding now going into an EU army.
Trade: The speed at which the EU is negotiating trade packs at unprecedented rates to further hedge its economy.
You're about to see another tectonic shift that I will be discussing soon. So stay tuned for more.
