"Digital Euro" Decoded: European Union Politics Terms


 The European Union has its own language that European politicians understand. Inside the 'EU bubble,' there is a variety of terms that sound like alien-speak to the average listener. In this series, we are going to decode these terms one by one, so that you too can understand the EU’s special language—and this will give you a greater understanding of the EU itself." The next term is the digital euro.

You will hear this term in central banking circles and financial policy debates. In a nutshell, it is a proposed central bank digital currency—essentially a digital form of cash issued directly by the European Central Bank.

While proponents pitch it as vital for keeping Europe economically sovereign against private tech giants and foreign digital currencies, critics warn it grants central authorities unprecedented oversight over everyday consumer transactions.
