"Unanimity" Decoded: Decoded: European Union Politics Terms

 


The European Union has its own language that European politicians understand. Inside the 'EU bubble,' there is a variety of terms that sound like alien-speak to the average listener. In this series, we are going to decode these terms one by one, so that you too can understand the EU’s special language—and this will give you a greater understanding of the EU itself." The next term is “unamity 
Two voting rules are contrasted constantly in the Council of the EU. In a nutshell, qualified majority voting uses a double majority of countries and population to pass EU laws. The problem is that key EU laws require unanimity. This voting rule requires every single member state to agree, giving any single member nation an absolute veto over major policy areas and treaty changes. This has brought on calls by EU politicians for a change from unanimity to qualified majority voting. Thus, unanimity is in the EU vernacular on a regular basis.
