"The European Union has its own language that European politicians understand. Inside the 'EU bubble,' there is a variety of terms that sound like alien-speak to the average listener. In this series, we are going to decode these terms one by one, so that you too can understand the EU’s special language—and this will give you a greater understanding of the EU itself." The next term is “democratic deficit”
You will hear this term in EU lawmaking circles and remains a guiding point of focus for EU constitutional experts. I heard it recently referenced by Sven Simon the European Union’s Co Chair of the European Parliament’s Committed on Constitutional Affairs.
In a nutshell, it refers to two EU realities, that the Commissioners are non elected and neither is the Commission president. It also refers to the fact that there is no proper balance of powers in the EU institutions. The Parliament could have more powers, the EU Commission can have more governmental powers. This is why former MEP Alyn Smith stated at a Spinelli event, “Our Europe has always been a work in progress.” I know this quote well, I was at that Spinelli event and recorded that myself. And EU constitutional specialists are presently at work on these issues. Some of which will be reported on this channel.
Understanding these terms is essential to knowing how the EU functions. In this series we will decode these terms one by one. I’m Erika Grey, be sure to hit that subscribe button, let me know your thoughts in the comments and we’ll see you in the next report."
