"Enhanced Cooperation" Decoded: European Union Politics Terms


 The European Union has its own language that European politicians understand. Inside the 'EU bubble,' there is a variety of terms that sound like alien-speak to the average listener. In this series, we are going to decode these terms one by one, so that you too can understand the EU’s special language—and this will give you a greater understanding of the EU itself." The next term is “ENHANCED COOPERATION 

 This is a formal institutional mechanism under the EU Lisbon Treaty allowing a minimum of nine member states to establish advanced integration or structured policy harmonization among themselves when a consensus among all member states proves unattainable, ensuring that political paralysis does not halt progress for willing reformers. This came about  to help solve the issue of the expanded EU that was keeping federalist aims from marching forward. It also acts a mechanism for an inner core of members from which the outer core builds from.
