"Federalism" Decoded: European Union Politics Terms


 The European Union has its own language that European politicians understand. Inside the 'EU bubble,' there is a variety of terms that sound like alien-speak to the average listener. In this series, we are going to decode these terms one by one, so that you too can understand the EU’s special language—and this will give you a greater understanding of the EU itself." The next term is “faceless bureaucrat” 

You will hear this term thrown around whenever insiders debate the ultimate destiny of the bloc. In a nutshell, federalism is the political ideology and constitutional model that underpins the European Union and its evolution.  It advocates for shifting core powers—like taxation, foreign policy, and defense—away from individual national capitals and into a central federal government modeled on the US federal government. 

While integrationists view it as the logical next step for European survival, defenders of national sovereignty view it as an existential threat to local democracy.
