You will hear this term whenever you travel across Europe or discuss border security. Named after a small village in Luxembourg, the Schengen area represents a zone where prior to the single market internal border controls were abolished, allowing passport-free travel for the agreed nations. It was so successful that it was incorporated into EU law. Moreoever it is now serves as a blueprint for coordinating policy not yet covered by EU laws.
