"The European Movement" Decoded: European Union Politics Terms


 

The European Union has its own language that European politicians understand. Inside the 'EU bubble,' there is a variety of terms that sound like alien-speak to the average listener. You will hear this historical and ongoing political movement referenced when discussing how the push for integration was and is organized from the ground up. In a nutshell, the European Movement International is a historic network—founded in the wake of WWII by figures like Winston Churchill and Altiero Spinelli at the 1948 Congress of The Hague—dedicated to advocating for a united, federal Europe. The movement is active in seeing that the Union evolves according to the federal blueprint.

 

For decades, it has operated as an elite-backed pressure group pushing national governments to surrender more sovereignty to Brussels.
