" The Treaties" Decoded: European Union Politics Terms


 

The European Union has its own language that European politicians understand. Inside the 'EU bubble,' there is a variety of terms that sound like alien-speak to the average listener. In this series, we are going to decode these terms one by one, so that you too can understand the EU’s special language—and this will give you a greater understanding of the EU itself." The  European Union lacks a single, traditional written constitution, "the Treaties" serve as its supreme law. These are the foundational international agreements—from the historic Treaty of Rome to Maastricht and Lisbon—that define the powers of Brussels, govern how member states interact, and set the legal boundaries of the entire supranational project. The treaties build upon each other with each one adding more competences.
